Spreads and Interpretation

What spreads to use. This is entirely up to the diviner. There is no right or wrong way. Tapping into their own intuition (which is highly recommended) diviners often design their own spread(s) to suit a particular need. The following will help you get started – or, in time, guide you to developing your own spreads.

A. One Card

A quick answer to a simple question. In a reflective state of mind, shuffle the cards and at the right moment, draw a card from the pack.

B. The Two Card Spread

The first card describes the situation (what surrounds you). The second card is the result. This spread is in synergy with the spirit of the Book of Change – that only change is constant. Remember to find out the timing for the result. For example, what be the outcome? When? The pictures and symbols will tell you these.

C. The Better of Two Choices

We are very often faced with choices to make. For example, in recruiting staff, you could only choose one out of two equally qualified candidates. In this case, pre-assign applicant A for position 1 and applicant B for position 2. Then, in a reflective state of mind, imagine that the inner qualities of these two people are being revealed to you. Mindfully draw two cards and put them in position. Each picture will give you the qualities of the two applicants or possible outcome should either be chosen.

D. The Three Card Spread (Past/Present/Future)

To analyze a situation for its cause, what surrounds it in the present and its future outcome, you need to draw three cards. The card in position one will show the significant aspects of the events that lead to the present situation. The second card represents the present. The final card gives the outcome.

E. The Celtic Cross Spread (The Card Spread)

The most common spread which gives answers to a logical sequence of questions. These therefore identify the cause, present and possible outcome of a situation. They also throw light on emotions and motivations. The meanings of the cards in each position are as follows:

    1. You – what covers you / general atmosphere
    2. Crosses or Blocks – Opposing Forces
    3. Beneath – Foundation / The past
    4. Behind – Past actions or influences
    5. What Crowns You – Potentiality / Possible Future Events
    6. Before – Forces Already in Motion
    7. Yourself – How you conduct or see yourself
    8. Environment – Opinions (others’)
    9. Hopes, Fears, or Expectations
    10. Final Outcome
